Before there was the Martini, there was the Martinez — a cocktail that defined the elegance of the late 19th century and paved the way for one of the world’s most enduring drinks. Traditionally made with gin, sweet vermouth, and a touch of maraschino, the Martinez is a bridge between the richness of a Manhattan and the crisp sophistication of a Martini.
At Durham Distillery, we’ve reimagined this historic classic using our Conniption Barrel Aged Gin — introducing subtle warmth, spice, and a touch of oak that transforms the cocktail into something altogether new. The result? A Martinez that’s deeper, smoother, and beautifully complex — a modern classic for those who appreciate tradition with a twist.
Conniption Barrel Aged Gin brings warmth and complexity, featuring botanicals like juniper, cardamom, and coriander, softened by time spent resting in oak barrels. This aging process imparts hints of vanilla, toasted spice, and a touch of caramel, creating a luxurious foundation that pairs perfectly with the bittersweet richness of Bordiga Rossa Vermouth.
A splash of Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur adds a subtle sweetness, while orange bitters brighten the flavor, making the Martinez both elegant and approachable. Finished with a twist of orange peel, this cocktail is perfect for intimate gatherings, post-dinner indulgence, or any occasion that calls for a touch of vintage sophistication.

Recipe Note
Why We Love It
This is a cocktail that rewards patience — slow stirring, slow sipping, and slow appreciation.
Our Conniption Barrel Aged Gin brings the smooth warmth of American oak to the table, while fino sherry adds brightness and complexity. A touch of Benedictine and a few dashes of lemon bitters round it out, giving the drink its elegant finish and subtle citrus lift.
It’s our idea of fall in a glass: golden, aromatic, and effortlessly refined.
